Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Saadh Sangat Ji,

The pictures of the events and aftermath of June 1984 (operation Bluestar) will evoke a variety of emotions amongst Sikhs of all generations. Seeing the holiest Sikh shrine turned into a battlefield, and the Akaal Takhat almost demolished was always going to hurt sentiments of the Sikhs. The innocent pilgrims who had come to observe the "shaheedi" of Guru Arjan Dev Ji were mercilessly killed by the Indian Army.

What followed in the state of Punjab was utter turbulence. Fake encounters became order of the day. A whole generation of Sikh youth went missing. There were many opportunists who took advantage of the unrest and maligned the sikh freedom movement by carrying out acts in the name of Sikhs.

In Late October of the same year, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh assasinated Indira Gandhi for her role in Operation Blue Star. In response government backed thugs ran riot in the Indian capital, where they had a free licence and helping hand from politicians and police to pretty much do as they please to the local Sikh population.

Seeing these injustices many Sikhs raised arms against the state. As a Khalsa we can never sit back and see injustices take place whether they are against us or anyone else.rally

The Chief Minister of Punjab who was elected in a dubious manner to say the least, Beant Singh, along with KPS Gill were responsible for the deaths of many Sikhs – many of whom had nothing to do with the freedom movement.

Dilavar Singh and Balwant Singh Rajona, could not see these daily fake encounters anymore. They had been working in the police force and had witnessed many of these dark deeds. They assassinated the chief minister.

We have all heard of the case of Balwant Singh Rajoana, which has once again seen the Panth rise from deep slumber. Bhai Sahib has practically been leading the panth from a prison cell. Sikhs all around the world have rallied together on his one call. His letters are anticipated eagerly by the Sikh community. It seems he is doing what our leaders have failed to do. He has urged all Sikhs to take pride in the unique Sikh identity, and also connect to our Guru.

Why are Sikhs wanting to Save a murderer?

Sikhs are against the death penalty. We want justice and a level playing field. Bhai Sahib himself has no fear of the gallows, and will happily accept the death sentence, as he has already expressed he has no faith in the Indian Judicial System as a Sikh.

The murderers of Sikhs are given promotions (Tytler and Sajjan Kumar) and are being protected, or in certain cases their sentences are being reduced (Kishori Lal). Yet it seems the noose has been specifically made for the Sikhs only.

1984 is a dark chapter from our history, but it is something we all need to research and educate ourselves about. We need to understand the reasons for the Sikh agitation, which can be traced back to the partition of Punjab. What made these sikhs who had given their all for mother india, then rise against that very same state. Please read around the subject so we can also educate others and eliminate the misconceptions which has been and continues to be propogated.

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Saadh Sangat Ji,

We would like to inform you that the journalist Bhai Jarnail Singh will be visiting various Gurdwara’s in Bradford and Leeds on Sunday 12th June. For those who are not aware of Bhai Sahib, he is the journalist who in protest lobbed his shoe in the direction of the Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram during a press conference. His protest was due to the Home Ministers lack of response to Bhai Sahibs questions relating to the CBI’s “clean chit” for Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 anti sikh riots.

Bhai Sahib stood up for the thousands of innocent sikhs that were brutally murdered in the riots, and wanted an explanation from the home minister as to how the perpetrators were able to walk away freely. Even today 27 years on the Sikhs have yet to see those individuals involved, bought to justice.

Bhai Sahib was fired from his post as defence correspondent for the Dainik Jagaran newspaper 3 months after the shoe incident. Since then Bhai Sahib has written a book on the 1984 riots titled “I accuse…”.

Bhai Sahib will be sharing his views on the riots, and the Sikhs ongoing fight for justice.

The schedule so far is as follows:

Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Bradford 10:00 am to 10:50am

Gurdwara Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Bradford 11:00 am to 11:50am

Gurdwara, Chapletown, Leeds 12:15pm to 1:00pm

It is our humble request that the sangat come out and support Bhai Sahib, just as he stood up for the victims of 1984. Please make time and attend the talks at the above Gurdwara Sahib’s.

In addition please note that the book “I accuse…” will be available on the day in both english and gurmukhi for £8.00, once again we can only humbly request that the sangat step forward and purchase a copy of the book.

A link for the book is attached below:

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

Saadh Sangat Ji,

We would like to inform you of a special programme to be held at Gurdwara Guru  Nanak Dev Ji on 7th November 2010. Bhai Jagjit Singh (Wakefield) will be presenting a lecture which will focus on the holocaust of 1984.

Below is a message from Bhai Jagjit Singh, which will explain the purpose and message contained within these lectures.

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa, Vaheguru ji ke fateh
Pyare jio, the next programme in the series of Shabad Guru Smagams will
be at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Wakefield Road, Bradford on Sunday 7th
November from 10.30am to 1pm.

November is almost here and this month reminds us of the many horrors that
innocent sikhs faced in Delhi and many other cities in 1984. However
the recent visit to UK of Kamal Nath, highlighted how few young sikhs
know about what happened in November 1984 and the causes and
perpetrators. This is because many young sikhs have been born in the
decades after the events of 1984 to 1992.

Last year, we did a 4 part lecture series called “Understanding our Modern
Sikh History” to bridge this gap. The third lecture is the series will
be repeated which covers the episode of the Carnage in November 1984.

These programmes will be in English and Punjabi, and are especially for the
next generation of Sikh Youth who wish to develop their understanding
of modern Panthic history.
